DO NO HARM: THE CAMPAIGN:

Tragically hundreds of babies were left brain damaged or died in the worst maternity scandal in the history of the NHS and sadly, bereaved mothers were often blamed for the deaths.

Nottingham (subject of a major ITV documentary 9/6/24 now available on ITVX: https://www.itvx.com)  has seen hundreds cases of ‘avoidable’ still births and long-term injuries.

Major inquiries are underway, some have been reported and in the case of the infected blood scandal denied for decades, the British state and politicians of all sides have only said ‘sorry’.

A former Health Secretary, Sajid Javid, described it as ‘the worst in a long line of disasters’ and wondered in despair ‘Why will it be anything different’ (20/5/24 House of Commons).

These victims have been supported by specialist lawyers who have fought a culture described by Stephen Flynn MP (SNP) as ‘…decades of deflection, decades of denial and decades of deceit’ (20/524 House of Commons).

THE NEW DANGER:

New MPS following the 2024 General Election are unaware that the Ministry of Justice is poised to push through legislation (at the stroke of a pen) which could see thousands blocked from getting specialist legal advice if they are injured in hospital or any part of the NHS.

If the ‘value’ of their case is judged to be below £25,000 (and that includes injured babies) then they may find it difficult to get a lawyer to take on their case and judges are ‘debating’ how to discourage self-representation.  This applies to England and Wales.

It is a scheme dreamt up by Jeremy Hunt and will lead to more and more injustices and we fear this is only the beginning. It will rise, over time, and affect victims in cases up to £100,000 and maybe beyond.
